Studies by US ophthalmologists showed that many of their patients have a genotype in which folic acid is only metabolised to a limited extent to L-methylfolate (MTHFR polymorphism). Even a high intake of folic acid in people with this genotype is no guarantee that the body, in particular the retina, is sufficiently supplied with active folate. L-methylfolate, on the other hand, has a very high bioavailability and activity. Supplementation with L-methylfolate provides the body, and in particular the retina, with active folate in order to meet the genetically, disease or diet related increased need for micronutrients.
